After 1620, the Battle of the White Mountain came to be seen both as a symbol of victory and as an omen of disaster.1 Catholic jubilation on the one side, and Protestant despair on the other, determined two extremes in a range of judgements of that event presented by historians of Bohemia, and of Europe in so far as the latter took Bohemia into account. Mutually opposed assessments became more moderate with the abandonment of purely confessional viewpoints by individual historians, who introduced wider social and political concerns into their study of Bohemian history. Although a variety of views of the Battle of the White Mountain have been put forward over the last two centuries by conservative and pro-Habsburg, liberal, nationalist (both Czech and German), radical, and finally, Marxist historians, a common feature of all these approaches was their emphasis upon the break with older traditions which resulted from the battle, that is, upon the discontinuity of development.2 KeywordsPolitical SystemSeventeenth CenturySixteenth CenturyMunicipal CouncilEstate CommunityThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
