the Great's Symbola et Emblemata of 1705 was the first Russian emblem book.It was one of the fruits of the young Tsar' s incognito stay in Holland as part of his own Great Embassy to the West early in his reign.While he was in Amsterdam in 1698 an arrangement was made for the merchant Jan Tesing to print books in Holland for sale in Russia.The royal warrant, dated 10 February 1700, grants and commands "Ivan Teseng to print in the town of Amsterdam European, Asiatic and American maps and drawings ofland and sea, all kinds of sheets and portraits of military men on land and sea, mathematical, architectural, civil engineering, and other artistic books in Slavonic and Latin together, as well as separate books either in Slavonic or in Dutch ...
