Abstract This chapter examines a Talmudic narrative about King Solomon and Ashmedai, king of the demons, and situates it within its eastern provincial Roman, Babylonian Jewish, and Persian cultural context. It highlights the importance of Christian traditions from the Roman East as a source of the literary motifs and traditions composing the Bavli. It looks at several substantive parallels between the Testament of Solomon and b. Gittin 68a–b to show that traditions made their way from the eastern Roman provinces to Mesopotamia during late antiquity. The literary analysis of this chapter offers key insights into the life of Jews in Babylonia during the period. The chapter also discusses the Testimony of Truth 9:3, a Christian tractate discovered at Nag Hammadi, Egypt, and its striking parallels to the Solomon/Ashmedai story in Bavli Gittin.
