Russian sources, particularly the Russian annals, are crucial for researching Turkish history. Amir Timur, one of Turkish history’s most influential statesmen and commanders, is no exception in this context. Amir Timur’s entry into Russian territory following Tokhtamysh, Khan of the Golden Horde, and his capture of the city of Yelets was described in Russian annals, and this event was also the subject of the historical story created at the beginning of the 15th century. In the mentioned work, Amir Timur is portrayed negatively through the eyes of the enemy, as is the case with all previous and subsequent forces coming from the East. Since Timur returned to his hometown after capturing the city of Yelets, the Russians claimed that Amir Timur retreated because he was afraid of them. They attributed this to the Virgin Mary icon brought to Moscow from Vladimir. The bringing of the icon from Vladimir and its rescue of the “Russian lands” is explained at length, thus justifying Moscow’s becoming the new center of the Russian principalities in the process of liberation from the Golden Horde. This study will give information about the historical story “About Tamerlane.” The historical story will be evaluated within the framework of actual events, and finally, the translation of the story into Turkish will be given.
