The retreating Jin forces fought their way northward until they crossed the Yangzi river about 1135 a .d .. Liang Hongyu and her husband volunteered to cross the river to Chuzhou and pro vide for its rebuilding and defense. The two turned their military forces into a large work force to rebuild houses, replant fields, and secure oxen. Chuzhou once again became a prosperous city and a line of defense for the Southern Song.
