In the course of the expansion of the Tibetan Empire, many non-Tibetan peoples came under Tibetan rule.Studying contemporary manuscripts from Dunhuang and eastern Turkestan, evidence regarding the presence of some of these peoples in the northern fringes of the Empire could be found.The aim of this paper is to show the context in which 'A-zha as well as members of the Da-myi appear, in order to prove that they were residents in these regions and to look for reasons for their migration.This paper is divided into the following parts.It starts with a short introduction on both excavation sites and the types of texts studied.The next section deals with the 'A-zha.This is introduced by a historical survey of the 'A-zha and their division into units of a thousand.Then two of these units and the Zing clan are traced in manuscripts from both sites.This is followed by an investigation on manuscripts concerning the Da-myi.Finally, a resettlement policy and the reasons for it are discussed followed by a conclusion and remaining questions.
