The island of Jamaica is located in the Caribbean Sea 150 km south of Cuba, 190 km west of the south western coast of Hispaniola, and 625 km northeast of the nearest point on the mainland-the eastern end of the boundary between Honduras and Nicaragua. The island falls between 1707' N and 1805' N latitude and 76IT W and 7822' W longitude. Jamaica has an area of 11,424 square km, making it the third larg est island in West Indies (Fig. It is grouped with Cuba, Hispaniola, and Puerto Rico as the Greater Antillean islands. The island measures 240 km from west to east and has a maximum north-south width of 80 km. The highest point on Jamaica is Blue Moun tain Peak at 2257 m (Blume 1974).
