Abstract: The Social War is now often seen as a separatist rebellion, not a war fought to obtain the Roman citizenship. Consequently, much scholarship has neglected the possible role of citizenship in the arguments and discourses which led to and followed the war. This contribution re-examines such arguments, especially that which construed citizenship as a benefaction conferred by Rome. This is interpreted as a rhetorical manipulation aimed at disguising Rome’s inability to act otherwise, and at perpetuating the idea of asymmetry of power between Rome and Italy.
