Abstract ‘The Trojan War in context: Mycenaeans, Hittites, Trojans, and Sea Peoples’ gives an overview of civilizations contemporary to the Trojan War. The Mycenaean civilization existed on mainland Greece until around 1200 bce. They engaged in Mediterranean trade and had an economy based on grapes, olives, and grain. Troy stood on a trade crossroads. The Hittites came from Anatolia and had an empire that reached across the Middle East to Babylon. Their civilization also collapsed around 1200 bce. It is thought that raids, or migration by the mysterious ‘Sea Peoples’ may have been responsible for this. Much ancient warfare is preserved in the literary record but, like the Trojan War, lacks archaeological evidence.
