Mehmed the Conqueror's Rebuilding of Istanbul

1453 CE · İstanbul · architectural

After the conquest of Constantinople, Mehmed actively rebuilt the city.

The first version of Topkapı Palace (a palace near Yedikule, then Topkapı), the Fatih Mosque and its complex, and the first section of the Grand Bazaar were built in this period. Turks from Anatolia and Greeks and Armenians from the Balkans were settled in Istanbul; the cosmopolitan identity of the city was deliberately reconstituted.
