The Construction of Rumeli Hisarı: Preparing the Siege of Constantinople

1452 CE · Boğaz (İstanbul kuzey), Anadolu · military

Before laying siege to Constantinople, Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror had the fortress of Rumeli Hisarı (Boğazkesen) built in order to control the Bosphorus; it was completed in only four months.

Anadolu Hisarı already stood opposite it. These two fortresses severed Constantinople's maritime link and made it all but impossible for Byzantium to receive help by sea.
