In 1461 Mehmed the Conqueror took the Greek Empire of Trebizond (the Komnenos dynasty); the last remnant of Byzantium passed into history.

Mehmed now formally assumed the title "Kayser-i Rum" (Caesar of Rome), and the Ottomans proclaimed themselves the lawful heirs of Rome. The southern shore of the Black Sea likewise came under Ottoman control.
