According to Islamic belief, flocks of birds (the ababil) sent by God pelted the army with stones of baked clay and destroyed it (Qur'an: Surah al-Fil). This year came to be known as the 'Year of the Elephant' and was identified with the year of the Prophet Muhammad's birth (peace be upon him).
