Bumin Unites the Tiele Tribes Before Founding

546 CE · Moğolistan · political

Bumin (Tumen/Bumın) subdued the rebellious Tiele tribes that had broken away from the Rouran and took them under his protection.

This force of 50,000 households gave him a military base capable of surpassing the previous Rouran power. He asked the Rouran khagan for his daughter's hand; the Rouran khagan refused, saying, "You are my blacksmith — how do you presume to marry me?" This insult turned Bumin toward an alliance with the Western Wei (a part of the Tabgach).
