Göktürk Khaganate Splits into East and West

582 CE · Moğolistan / Orta Asya · political

After the death of Taspar Khagan a struggle over the succession broke out, resulting in a definitive split between Ishbara (East) and Tardu (West).

The shrewd policy of sowing discord pursued by the Sui dynasty also fuelled this fragmentation. The Eastern Göktürk Khaganate was centred on Mongolia, the Western Göktürk Khaganate on Central Asia and the Silk Road. Neither wing could withstand Chinese pressure in the 7th century.
