The Abbasid Caliph Nasir III invited the Khwarazmshahs into Iraq, defeated the last Iraqi Seljuk Sultan Tughril III and had him killed.

The symbolic importance of this date is great: the Abbasid caliphate had brought down a Turkish dynasty, but its gain did not last long — the Khwarazmshahs soon set their sights on Baghdad as well.
