The Crusader Conquest of Antioch and Jerusalem

1098 CE · Antakya / Kudüs · military

As a result of the First Crusade (1095), the Crusaders conquered Antioch in 1098 and Jerusalem in 1099.

Absorbed in internal conflicts, the Seljuk forces were unable to organize a joint defence; parts of Syria and Palestine passed under Crusader control. Seljuk fragmentation was the fundamental cause of Crusader success.
