Hürrem Sultan (Roxelana), the wife of Suleiman the Magnificent, transformed the power of the harem within the palace and continued to be a powerful political actor until the sultan's death.

She founded charitable institutions (waqfs) and commissioned works from Mimar Sinan. The "Hürrem pattern" inaugurated a structure that in the following period increased the influence of women over the sultans.
