From the 3rd century BCE the Sarmatian confederations (the Roxolani, the Iazyges and the Aorsi) pushed the Scythians westward; the Scythians were confined to a small remnant state in the Crimea.

The Sarmatians became the new masters of the steppe between the Don and the Danube. Cataphract heavy cavalry gained influence in this period.
