During the First Crusade the Crusader forces besieged İznik (Nicaea); the Anatolian Seljuk Sultan Kilij Arslan I hastened to its relief but was defeated.

Through Byzantine-Crusader cooperation the city fell (June 1097). Kilij Arslan withdrew to Konya, and the Anatolian Seljuks moved their capital there. The Crusaders' passage through Anatolia was thereby secured.
