Mahmud al-Kashgari compiled a comprehensive dictionary of the Turkic language for Arabic speakers in Baghdad.

It contains more than 7,500 words and covers the language, geography and folk poetry of the Turkic tribes. An appended map shows the distribution of the Turkic tribes — the first systematic record of Turkic linguistic and geographical knowledge.
