In 1141 the army of the Qara Khitai (the Buddhist Kitan) inflicted a heavy defeat on the Seljuk sultan Sanjar; control of Western Turkestan passed to the Qara Khitai.

The outcome gave rise in Europe to the legend of "Prester John"; the Crusaders believed that in the East there was a Christian ally who would defeat the Muslims.
