Felt was used for covering yurts, for horse harness and for clothing. The Pazyryk Carpet is especially notable (c. 500 BCE, the oldest known carpet in the world, probably of Iranian or Caucasian manufacture; the felt pieces, however, are directly of the steppe). Felt-working became a tradition in the art of Turkic women.
