Kutrigur and Utigur Confederations Form

463 CE · Karadeniz Kuzeyi · political

The remnants of the Huns, dispersed after the defeat at Nedao, divided into two groups along the axis of the Don River: the Kutrigurs in the west and the Utigurs in the east.

Both groups spoke Turkic or a language close to Turkic and maintained the steppe horse culture. They were engaged with one another in both trade and conflict, and were the targets of Byzantium's "divide and rule" policy.
