Massagetae Social and Cultural Life

600 BCE · Amu Derya Deltası / Aral Havzası · culture

Herodotus describes the Massagetae as a warrior people who worshipped the sun, consumed horse meat and narcotic herbs, and practised collective marital relations (probably an exaggeration).

They raised horses and cattle and caught fish. They had golden armour and bronze weapons, as well as women warriors (possibly conflated with Sarmatian tradition).
