After the death of Mevlana Jalal al-Din Rumi (1273), his son Sultan Veled gave the Mevlevi order an institutional form; the sema ceremony and the traditions of music and poetry were bound to written rules.

Konya became the centre of Sufism in the Islamic world. The translation of the Masnavi from Persian into other languages began in this period.
