Genghis Khan's Central Asian Campaign

1219 CE · Maveraünnehir / Horasan / İran · military

The campaign that began with Genghis Khan's entry into Khwarazmian lands was one of the most destructive military operations in history.

Samarkand (1220), Bukhara (1220), Merv, Nishapur and Herat were reduced to ruins. By some estimates millions of people lost their lives; Central Asia's irrigation infrastructure and urban fabric did not recover for centuries. The Turkic tribes were scattered, and some of them migrated westward.
