Mongol advance forces inflicted a crushing defeat on the allied Kipchak–Rus army at the Kalka River.

The battle displayed Mongol power in Eastern Europe for the first time; permanent occupation came not with this campaign but with the great expedition of 1237–1242. Some of the Rus princes were taken captive and put to death by being crushed beneath heavy stones.
