Murad I conquered Sofia in 1385 and Niš in 1386.

Despite Bulgarian and Serbian resistance, the systematic advance into the interior of the Balkans continued. The taking of these cities was the turning point at which the Ottomans established a permanent presence in the central Balkans; a great clash with the Serbs was now unavoidable.
