The Founding of the Janissary Corps

Youths taken through the devşirme (levied from Christian families) were converted to Islam and given military training, forming a salaried professional army bound to the sultan whose members did not marry (in the early period). For four hundred years the Janissaries were the most powerful military body of the Ottoman state.
