In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries the Ottomans developed an original tradition of geographical writing.

Piri Reis's maps of 1513 and 1528, Seydi Ali Reis's travel account of the Indian Ocean, "Miratü'l-Memalik" (1557), and Kâtip Çelebi's world geography "Cihannüma" are the peaks of this tradition. Ottoman navigational knowledge was also taken as a reference by Europeans.
