Süleyman Pasha, the son of Orhan Bey, crossed into European territory for the first time in 1352 to assist the Byzantine prince Kantakouzenos in an internal conflict; afterwards, following an earthquake, the Ottomans effectively seized the Gallipoli region (1354).
