In the 1st century BCE the Roxolani and Iazyges Sarmatians drew near to the Danube; in the time of Mithridates VI of Pontus, Sarmatian mercenaries came into indirect contact with the Roman and Macedonian armies for the first time.

Roman sources describe the Sarmatians as "mad horsemen". In the centuries that followed, the transmission of Sarmatian and Alan culture to Europe would continue.
