The Seljuks Reach the Aegean: Çaka Bey and İzmir

The Turkmen bey Çaka took İzmir and formed a small naval force, mounting expeditions against Chios, Lesbos and Rhodes.

He allied with the Anatolian Seljuks and pressed Byzantium by both land and sea. The Byzantine Emperor Alexios I eventually persuaded Kilij Arslan to have Çaka killed (1092). This was the Turks' first access to the Aegean.
