In the 12th and 13th centuries the Anatolian Seljuks built more than a hundred caravanserais (hans).

The Sultan Hanı (1229-1232), Sultanhanı (1232-1236) and Ağzıkara Hanı are the masterpieces of this period. Each han was a fully equipped road station containing a courtyard, stables, a bath, a mosque and lodging quarters; the state offered its services to merchants free of charge.
