Defeated by a Qara Khitai attack (the Battle of Qatwan in 1141) and subsequently held captive by Oghuz rebels (1153–1157), Sanjar died in 1157, whereupon the Great Seljuk state disintegrated; the Kirman, Iraq and Syrian Seljuk branches became independent.
