Tutush, the brother of Sultan Malik-Shah, assumed the government of Syria and laid the foundations of the Syrian Seljuk state centred on Damascus.

Positioning himself against the Fatimid remnants, he strengthened Sunni Islam in the region. The Syrian Seljuks survived until 1117 and were in constant conflict with the Crusader states.
