Sogdian Maniakh Reaches Constantinople — Türk-Byzantine Alliance

Istemi, yabgu of the Western Göktürks, sent an embassy to Constantinople headed by the Sogdian merchant Maniakh.

Its purpose was a direct Türk-Byzantine silk trade bypassing Sasanid Iran, together with a military alliance against the Sasanids. Emperor Justin II received the delegation, and Byzantium's return envoy Zemarchus travelled to the Türk khagan. It was the first official Türk-Byzantine diplomatic link.
