While it drew inspiration from Hagia Sophia in its arrangement of "four half-domes", it created an original synthesis. The mosque stood at the centre of a great complex comprising a madrasa, a bathhouse, a soup kitchen, a hospital and a caravanserai. The tombs of Suleiman and of Hürrem Sultan are also here.
