640 CE · Horasan / Maveraünnehir · military

The arrival of the Muslim Arab conquests in Khorasan and Transoxiana (the 640s to the 670s) initiated the first military contacts with the Turkic khaganates.

As the Arabs reached the Oxus (Amu Darya) they clashed with the Sogdian cities and the Turkic tribes. In this process Sogdian merchants came into contact with Islamic culture, and some Turkic tribes supplied mercenaries to the Muslim states.
