762 CE · Luoyang, Çin (Uygur Sarayı) · religious

In 762 Bögü Khagan received a Manichaean priest at Luoyang and made Manichaeism (a synthesis of Zoroastrian, Buddhist and Christian elements) the state religion of the Uyghurs.

Prohibitions on alcohol and meat were introduced; this social change conflicted with the traditional economy of the Turkic steppe. It is the only instance in history of a state that adopted Manichaeism as its official religion.
