Sultan Selim I inflicted a heavy defeat on the Safavid Shah Ismail at Chaldiran; superiority in the use of artillery proved decisive.

Tabriz passed briefly into Ottoman hands, but the army withdrew because the Janissaries refused to winter there. This victory largely determined the Sunni-Shi'i frontier and forms the basis of the present-day border between Turkey and Iran.
