The Yuezhi people bred horses in Gansu and traded in precious stone (jade); they were the early controllers of the Hexi Corridor.

Their language was in all probability Tocharian (Indo-European); Tocharian texts have been preserved in the Tarim basin. Immediately west of the Chinese frontier they formed a multicultural "bridge people".
